From a mix of fresh botanical herbs, picked in bloom and processed as they once were, comes the "Jefferson – Amaro importante" liqueur, so important that it reached the podium at the end of April 2018 at the World Liqueur Awards, the prestigious international contest that celebrates the best of the world's beverages, both as best liqueur and as best herbal amaro.
"Strong on the nose, with a fading bitterness at the beginning. Soft and smooth, and very well-balanced with a herbal finish," was the reasoning behind the international panel's award for the liqueur produced in Calabria by Ivano Trombino, owner of Vecchio Magazzino Doganale, a young entrepreneurial venture in Montalto Uffugo, a hilltop town in the province of Cosenza where the production facility is located. Jefferson, the result of a recipe dating back to 1871, is renowned for its unique blend of bergamot, bitter and sweet oranges, rosemary, and oregano, blended with other herbs and spices.
Smooth and smooth, it's pleasant both at room temperature and chilled, and it also pairs well with classics such as Americano, Martinez, and Boulevardier, replacing Vermouth. History has it that the production of liqueurs at the Vecchio Magazzino Doganale began in the late 19th century, when a ship departing from the port of Panama with a cargo of sugar cane alcohol sank on the coast of Calabria. The ship was captained by Jefferson, who survived along with navigator Roger and ship's doctor Gil. The three, the only survivors of the shipwreck, found refuge at the Vecchio Magazzino Doganale, a historic shop selling herbs, spices, and contraband liqueurs, run by Raffaele Trombino, known as "u Giocondo." There they settled and began producing liqueurs using Calabria's botanical heritage.
History, again, tells us that it was Jefferson himself who selected citrus fruits, spices, and aromatic herbs from all over the region, effectively opening the doors to the production of world-class excellence, built on knowledge, love, and respect for Calabria. This is now carried on by Ivano Trombino (Giocondo's great-grandson, who has embarked on this fascinating family adventure), who likes to define himself as a "producer of rural liqueurs," liqueurs deeply rooted in the traditions and values of our ancestors.
